Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction is a common medical condition.  A majority of men suffering from this condition never disclose this openly because of the shame surrounding it.  Studies have estimated that roughly over 18 million men in the United States suffer from Erectile Dysfunction.  Though it can affect any man at any age, it is prevalent in men over 40 years of age.

Doctors used to think psychological problems were the main cause of ED (Erectile Dysfunction).  In fact, less than 15% of cases have an emotional basis.  Men who get normal erections during sleep, but not during sex, should suspect mental factors are responsible.  Many men blame ED on aging, and though this can be the cause, it is not always the culprit.  Erectile Dysfunction can be a result of adverse side effects from medications with varied chemical compositions or can be due to the effects of different diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, low testosterone levels, or enlarged prostate glands.  Erectile dysfunction is also very common in male patients who have undergone prostate surgery due to the physical trauma and/or some damage to the nerves.  Smoking, alcohol abuse and emotional conditions such a depression and anxiety can also trigger erectile dysfunction.  As you have just read, Erectile Dysfunction can be due to many different reasons.

- Vascular Diseases including, but not limited to: atherosclerosis & high blood pressure.
Metabolic Diseases such as diabetes & obesity
- Neurological Disorders including spinal cord problems
- Endocrine disorder including problems of the pituitary gland and testicles
- Prostate problems, especially treatment for prostate cancer
- Medications including, but not limited to, drugs for high blood pressure, cholesterol, depression, anxiety and ulcers.
- Lifestyle choices including smoking, alcohol abuse, lack of exercise and substance abuse.

The most commonly adopted method of managing ED is oral medication.  Commercially available products such as Viagara and Cialis are very effective, but also very expensive.  Community Pharmacy Compounding & Wellness Center can offer men affordable options for ED.
